BEING FRANK ON FOOTBALL
As, yet another international break looms, (this will be the third already this season) the Premier League title race is hotting up. As things stand, under new head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool find themselves top of the table with a two-point lead over four times Champions Manchester City.
We have learned over the years that a lead that is in double figures is sometimes not enough, so we cannot afford to read to much into it at this stage in the season. The same applies to our Premier Prediction League, so don't get too despondent if you find yourself near the foot of the table, or indeed too excited if you are near the top!
Interestingly, last weekend both Arsenal and Manchester City lost and this explains why the reds find themselves top of the pack having narrowly defeated Brighton 2-1 at Anfield in a closely fought encounter.
The surprise package so far this season is Nottingham Forest, who currently sit in third as this goes to print. They have won five of their ten encounters and this includes their first win against Liverpool on Merseyside! Nuno Espirito Santo has done a magnificent job so far, and his calm dexterity must bode well for his squad.
And as one Dutchman over-performs as boss of Liverpool, another under-performs with Manchester United which has resulted in the dismissal of Eric Ten Haag.
Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes says that he feels responsible for his sacking. Talking to Sky Sports he said solemnly, "It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes. You have to take some of the blame on yourself because it is the team that is not doing so well and it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players."
At the foot of the table there are still two clubs who have yet to register a win. Wolves sit in 20th and Ipswich find themselves sandwiched between the West Midlands team and Southampton who broke their duck with a 1-0 win against Everton, which keeps the Toffees within spitting distance of the relegation zone. It is still early days but to not have recorded a victory in ten attempts must be very concerning for the sides who remain winless.
The Tractor Boys will be licking their wounds again after taking a two goal lead away to Brentford only to eventually lose that match 4-3; after they had Harry Clarke red-carded. Then they were leading thanks to a fantastic volley from Leif Davis against Leicester City, only to be denied a blatant penalty and in the same movement seeing Kalvin Phillips depart early due to another very dubious dismissal at Portman Road. They say that luck evens itself out over a season but I am not convinced. If this had been one of the big fish in the pond VAR would have insisted that the referee goes to the monitor and investigate the incident. One rule for one it seems.
In the Championship, Sunderland have a three-point lead over Leeds United. The Whites were cruelly robbed of a Premier League place last time around, losing to the Saints in the play-off final. Sheffield United, Burnley, Watford and West Brom are the other clubs in the top six.
In Scotland, Celtic and Aberdeen are neck and neck on 28 points, but Rangers are surprisingly nine points adrift, having played the same number of games.
Here in the Netherlands, it is a familiar tale. PSV lead the way with 30 points which is five points more than Ajax in second - although the gap has closed dramatically recently with the Amsterdam club defeating Feyenoord 0-2 away, and winning at home to leaders PSV 3-2 last weekend!
